Dear Dr. M. Menóndez y Pelayo: I receive your honoured note of 3rd July last only today. I have been abroad, hence delay in writing to thank you, a delay which you will kindly forgive.

I am grateful to you for your kind acquiescence in my proposal to do into English your celebrated «Historia de los Heterodoxos» and I only await the honour you promise me, by a copy of the new Edition.

May you have health promptly to accomplish the desired task!

I am in hopes of obtaining most valuable co-operation by way of a preface to the translation at the hands of one of our leading Protestan! Bishops, himself a most learned man on the subject. In his preface he will no doubt interest us all. I eagerly await the new Edition...

May I hasten to offer to your international fame and great learning the profound respect of myself and colleagues coupled with our warm admiration of your great literary gifts? I learn today of the tribute paid to your great merit by His Majesty King Alfonso and I hasten to offer you sincere congratulations of this on hoard [?] taken of Royal appreciation of your labours. In honouring you, Spain's great son, his majesty honours himself!

That you may have long life and robust health to enjoy it is the sincere whish of your admirer

Estimado Sr. M. Menéndez y Pelayo: Hasta hoy no he recibido su amable nota del pasado 3 de julio. He estado en el extranjero, y de ahí el retraso en escribir a Vd., un retraso que amablemente me disculpará.

Le agradezco mucho su amable consentimiento a mi propuesta de traducir al inglés su célebre Historia de los Heterodoxos y sólo espero el honor que Vd. me promete, de un ejemplar de la nueva Edición.

¡Que recobre su salud prontamente y pueda realizar su deseada tarea!

Tengo esperanza de obtener la más valiosa colaboración, con un prólogo a la traducción hecho por uno de nuestros dirigentes Protestantes, Bishops, uno de los hombres más impuestos en este tema. En su prólogo él nos interesará a todos sin ninguna duda. Espero ardientemente la nueva edición...

¿Puedo apresurarme a ofrecer a su fama internacional y gran sabiduría mi profundo respeto y el de mis colegas junto con nuestra ferviente admiración por sus grandes dotes literarias? Hoy he sabido del homenaje que su Majestad el Rey Alfonso le ha rendido por sus méritos y me apresuro a ofrecerle mis más sinceras felicitaciones por esta expresión del aprecio Real por sus trabajos. ¡Al honrarle a Vd., gran hijo de España, su Majestad se honra a sí mismo!
