My dear sir: Your favor of May 8 was duly received, and I have to thank you for your kindness in securing for me the services of Doctor Antonio Paz y Melia, the result of whose labors I trust will serve to throw some new light on the activity and functions of the Holy Office.

I have been investigating with some minuteness the relations between the differents races in the Península from the periods of the Gothic monarchy as the only mode of comprehending the factors which helped to the genesis and development of the Inquisition of Ferdinand and Isabella. It seems curious to me that, as far as my reading extends no writer outside of Spain seems to have grasped this fact. It is this which deprives the theories of such men as Maistre, Ranke, Hefels, Gams and others of all scientific value. In fact, their labored apologies, representing the Inquisition as a mere political machine, are in reality the severest condemnation of the Church which would allow such a prostitution of its sacred funtions. The real explanation is to be found in the universal public opinion of the day which regarded unity of faith as the most important objet to be attained by both Church and State, and in the antagonism which had spring up between Castilian and Jew and Mudejar. How this came to pass is the real problem, and for this I have been seeking a solution.

I entirely agree with you (Het. Esp, I, 638) that the enumeration by Llorente of the victims of the Inquisition is entirely unworthy of credit, and I was surprised to see that Sr. Amador de los Ríos adopted it with scarce an expression of doubt. I tabulated the cases in the list at the end of the Libro Verde de Aragón and was impressed with the fewness of the executions, and this was confirmed by a Ms. list which I have of the autos celebrated in Zaragoza. Do you think that any authentic details of the kind are to be found in the Archives of Alcalá? It would be a very interesting point to determine.

Mi estimado Sr.: Su favor del 8 de mayo fue puntualmente recibido, y tengo que agradecerle su amabilidad en asegurarme los servicios del Dr. Antonio Paz y Melia, el resultado de cuyos trabajos confío en que servirán para arrojar alguna nueva luz sobre la actividad y funciones del Santo Oficio.

He estado investigando con alguna minuciosidad las relaciones entre las diferentes razas en la Península desde el período de la monarquía Gótica como el único modo de comprender los factores que favorecieron la génesis y desarrollo de la Inquisición de Fernando e Isabel. Me parece curioso que, hasta donde llegan mis lecturas, ningún escritor fuera de España parece haber captado este hecho. Esto es lo que quita a las teorías de hombres como Maistre, Ranke, Hefele, Gams y otros todo valor científico. En efecto, sus elaboradas apologías representando a la Inquisición como una mera máquina política son, en realidad, la más severa condenación de la Iglesia que habría consentido tal prostitución de sus sagradas funciones. La explicación real se debe buscar en la opinión pública universal de la época que consideraba la unidad de fe como el objetivo más importante a alcanzar tanto por la Iglesia como por el Estado, y en el antagonismo que había surgido entre castellanos y judíos y mudéjares. Cómo pudo suceder esto es el verdadero problema y de ello he estado buscando una solución.

Estoy totalmente de acuerdo con Vd. ( Het. Esp . I, 638) en que la enumeración que hace Llorente de las víctimas de la Inquisición carece totalmente de crédito, y me sorprendió ver que el Sr. Amador de los Ríos la adoptó con escasa manifestación de duda. Yo enumeré los casos en la lista al final del Libro Verde de Aragón y quedé impresionado por el pequeño número de ejecuciones, lo que fue confirmado por una lista manuscrita que tengo de los autos celebrados en Zaragoza. ¿Cree Vd. que algunos detalles auténticos de este género pueden encontrarse en los Archivos de Alcalá? Sería un punto muy interesante a determinar.
