My dear sir: When I wrote to you six months ago, I expected that the first volume of my History of the Inquisition would be ready during the summer. It has been delayed and I am only now able to send it by mail with this. The second and third volumes will follow at short intervals. It is in the third that I have occasion to allude to Arnaldo de Vilanova, Juan de Pera Tallada and Ramon Lulio, on whose careers your researches have thrown so much light.

When this work is off of my hands, I hope to follow it with a history of the modern Inquisition. In this the Spanish Santo Oficio of course occupies a predominating place, and I presume that there must still be a large amount of inedited material in the libraries and archives of Spain. If you could put me in the way of obtaining access to this by the employement of some one to make abstracts and copies, I would be infinitely obliged to you. The late Sr. Amador de los Ríos kindly undertook for me and I received from him some Mss. of interest, but his death deprived me of further aid.

I am having researches made among the Llorente Mss. preserved in the Bibl. Nat. of Paris. The Bodleian Library of Oxford, the Royal Library of Copenhagen and the Royal Library of Munich, have all kindly sent me Spanish Mss., some of them of much interest - but of course the maine source of information lies in Spain and as my engagements do not admit of my visiting your land I can only obtain what I want by employing others. I hope to find some indications which would guide me in the very interesting work of St. Melgares Marin, but, admirable as it is in others respects, it is lacking in references.

Mi estimado Sr.: Cuando le escribí a Vd. hace seis meses esperaba que el primer volumen de mi Historia de la Inquisición estuviera a punto durante el verano. Se ha demorado algo, y sólo ahora puedo remitírselo por correo aéreo junto con ésta. Los volúmenes segundo y tercero seguirán en breves intervalos. En el tercero es donde tengo ocasión de referirme a Arnaldo de Vilanova, Juan de Pera Tallada y Ramón Lulio, sobre cuyas figuras tanta luz han arrojado sus investigaciones.

Cuando esta obra esté terminada, espero continuarla con una de la Inquisición moderna. En ésta el Santo Oficio español ocupa naturalmente un lugar predominante y me imagino que todavía debe de haber una enorme cantidad de material inédito en las bibliotecas y archivos de España. Si Vd. pudiera ponerme en el camino de tener acceso a esto mediante el empleo de alguien que hiciera extractos y copias, le quedaría infinitamente agradecido. El difunto Sr. Amador de los Ríos se comprometió amablemente a hacerme este favor y recibí de él algunos Mss. de interés, pero su muerte me privó de ulterior ayuda.

Tengo hechas investigaciones entre los Mss. Llorente que se conservan en la Biblioteca Nacional de París. La Biblioteca Bodleian de Oxford, la Biblioteca Real de Copenhague y la Biblioteca Real de Munich, todas amablemente me han remitido Mss. españoles, algunos de ellos de gran interés; pero como es obvio la principal fuente de información está en España, y como mis obligaciones no permiten mi visita a su país, solamente puedo lograr lo que deseo sirviéndome de otros. Confío encontrar algunas indicaciones que me guíen en el muy interesante trabajo del Sr. Melgares Marín, pero, aun con lo admirable que es en otros aspectos, es deficiente en referencias.
