Justification of the project | Usefulness of the project | Aristotelian tradition | Reflections on progress in philosophy
The project to create a selective Virtual Library on Aristotle, his commentators and his influence on the History of Western Thought is very large and ambitious, given that for the three works by Aristotle cited - Politics, Nicomachean Ethics and Rhetoric - there are more than 600 commentaries, from the first made in the Middle Ages to those of the 18th century and a large number of manuscripts are also catalogued.
On the other hand, if comments on the economic work were to be included [1], the series would be increased by about fifty more texts. But as it is a dubious work by Aristotle, it will not be included in the project.
The aim of this project is to digitally reproduce in image, more than the work of the Aristotle himself, although the translations into Spanish carried out by the Prince of Viana will be included together with some modern Latin editions, the works of the commentaries on the three most important works cited in the period of time indicated, some six centuries, as well as some books that have been inspired by Aristotle and that can be considered commentaries on his work.
This is a project in which the texts are written in Latin and their realization will offer the researcher original material that served as a basis for shaping the Juridical, Political and Moral Thought of Western civilization.
The series will feature a selection of authors that will cover the Aristotelian tradition of Politics, Nicomachean Ethics and Rhetoric. Therefore, the researcher, the library or the person who uses the system will have at his disposal a very complete and fundamental material and information to understand the Intellectual History of Europe, of the two great Christian traditions that used Aristotle to elaborate a Practical Philosophy (Legal, Political and Moral): Protestantism and Catholicism.
1. Many comments on Politics are linked to economic ones, which will be respected because they form a unit. However, those that are exclusively from this dubious work of Aristotle will not have any place in the project, for example, the following printed text:
